Motus First Login:
Quick-Start Guide
Motus is FMCSA's modern, secure registration platform. Here's everything you need to get in — and how to add DOT Compliance Company as your Transportation Service Provider.
What is Motus?
Motus is the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's (FMCSA) modern, secure platform that centralizes all registration actions for carriers and supporting companies. It replaces the legacy FMCSA Portal.
Through Motus, you can apply for or update a USDOT number, file for operating authority, complete biennial MCS-150 updates, make company information changes, and designate Transportation Service Providers like DOT Compliance Company to manage filings on your behalf.
Before You Begin
Have these ready before starting your first login:
Login.gov Account
You need an email address to sign in with Login.gov. If you previously used the FMCSA Portal, use the same email address — this links your existing records automatically.
Device with a Camera
You'll need a smartphone, tablet, or computer with a webcam to complete identity verification. Both are supported — see the instructions below.
Government-Issued ID
Have a valid driver's license, U.S. passport, or resident card ready. Your name on the ID must match the name you enter in your Motus user profile.
Step-by-Step: First Login
Sign In with Login.gov
Navigate to the Motus homepage and click “Sign In Login.gov” in the Regulated Entities & Supporting Companies section. Log in with your existing Login.gov credentials or create a new account.
Accept the Rules of Behavior
Once authenticated through Login.gov, you'll be presented with the FMCSA IT system's Rules of Behavior. Read through the terms carefully, then click the button at the bottom of the screen to agree and proceed.
Verify Your Identity
To protect your data, you must complete a quick identity check. Access the identity verification tool and follow the on-screen prompts to capture images of your face and your government-issued ID.
A QR code will appear on screen. Scan it with your smartphone's camera to use your phone for the photo capture. No smartphone camera app needed — just open your camera.
Click the blue hyperlink below the QR code that says “Or click here to use the camera on this device.” This uses your phone's camera directly.
Once identity verification is complete, click “Next” to continue.
Complete Your User Profile
Fill out your Motus user profile — required for everyone logging in for the first time.
- Name: Pre-fills from your government-issued ID — must match exactly
- Email: Pre-fills from Login.gov — see the security tip below
- Contact Info: Fill in your address and phone number
Select Your Workflow
Once your profile is created, you'll enter the workflow selection dashboard. Choose the option that applies to you:
Link an Existing USDOT Number
You already have a USDOT number and want to connect it to your Motus account.
Start a New Registration
You're applying for a new USDOT number or operating authority for the first time.
Register as a Supporting Company
Use this to add a Transportation Service Provider like DOT Compliance Company (see section below).
Add DOT Compliance Company as Your Transportation Service Provider
This is the most important step for letting us file on your behalf. Once you add us in Motus, we can process your MCS-150 updates, authority changes, and other filings directly.
Log in to Motus and complete your user profile (steps 1–4 above).
From the workflow selection dashboard, choose "Register as a Supporting Company."
When prompted, search for "DOT Compliance Company" — or use our Transportation Service Filer Number: 6255735.
Select DOT Compliance Company from the results as your Transportation Service Provider.
Complete the registration confirmation steps.
You're done — we now have the access we need to file on your behalf.
Need help? We walk you through it every day.
Call us at (844) 238-4358 — Mon–Fri, 8AM–5PM MT. We'll stay on the phone with you through the entire Motus setup process.
Quick Tips for Motus
Use the same Login.gov email you used for the old FMCSA Portal — this links your existing carrier records automatically.
Don't use your public business email for your Motus profile. Use a personal email tied to your Login.gov account.
Have your smartphone ready — you'll need it to scan a QR code for identity verification if you're logging in on a computer.
Your government-issued ID must be current and valid. Expired IDs will fail the identity verification step.
FMCSA help is available via chat, email, or phone between 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM Eastern Time at fmcsa.dot.gov.
If no camera is available anywhere, search for an enrollment center at fmcsa.dot.gov to complete identity verification in person.
