IFTA account setup and quarterly fuel tax filings.
Who Needs This?
About This Service
The International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) requires motor carriers operating qualified motor vehicles in multiple IFTA member jurisdictions to file quarterly fuel tax reports with their base state.
**Who Must Register for IFTA** Motor carriers operating vehicles with 3 or more axles, OR vehicles over 26,000 lbs Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), that travel in two or more IFTA member jurisdictions (48 contiguous U.S. states plus 10 Canadian provinces). Single-state operators are exempt from IFTA.
**IFTA Quarterly Deadlines**
- Q1 (January–March): due April 30
- Q2 (April–June): due July 31
- Q3 (July–September): due October 31
- Q4 (October–December): due January 31
Late filings incur a penalty of $50 or 10% of the net tax due, whichever is greater, plus interest on unpaid amounts.
**What IFTA Account Setup Includes ($250)** Initial registration with your base state, IFTA license and decals (state decal fees may be additional), and first quarter filing.
**Quarterly Filing ($125/vehicle per quarter)** Each quarter, a filing agency calculates fuel tax by jurisdiction based on miles traveled and fuel purchased, and submits the return to your base state. Carriers enrolled in the quarterly reminder program are contacted each quarter to collect mileage data — no deadlines to track.
