**Deadlines & Triggers** Filing is required every two years. The filing year is determined by the last digit of your USDOT number: odd last digit = odd-numbered years; even last digit = even-numbered years. The specific month within that year is also based on your USDOT number. Operating past the deadline risks deactivation.

**Consequences of Non-Compliance** Failure to file results in USDOT number deactivation and civil penalties up to $1,000 per day (maximum $10,000). Operating with a deactivated USDOT number may result in out-of-service orders at roadside inspections and loss of operating authority.

**Who Must File** Every motor carrier, freight forwarder, or broker assigned a USDOT number — including owner-operators with a single truck — must file the MCS-150 biennial update. There are no exemptions based on fleet size or operating status.
