About This Service
California's Motor Carrier Permit (MCP) is required for carriers operating certain commercial vehicles in California. The MCP is issued by the California DMV and must be displayed in the vehicle at all times during California operations.
**Who Must Obtain an MCP** Motor carriers operating vehicles with two axles and a gross vehicle weight (GVW) over 26,000 lbs, vehicles with three or more axles regardless of weight, or any vehicle combination over 26,000 lbs GVW in California must hold a current MCP.
**When Registration Is Required** The MCP must be in place before the vehicle operates in California. Annual renewal is required. Operating without a current MCP may result in citations and out-of-service orders.
**Bundle Option** If a CA Number is also needed, both can be obtained together for $300 total — saving $100 compared to ordering separately.
