USDOT Revocation

Motor carriers that have ceased interstate operations should voluntarily revoke their USDOT number. Voluntary revocation stops compliance obligation notices, removes the carrier from the federal active carrier database, and eliminates ongoing filing requirements such as biennial MCS-150 updates.

**When to File** Voluntary cancellation is appropriate when a carrier has permanently ceased operations, sold the business, or no longer operates commercially in interstate commerce. Carriers that temporarily suspend operations may prefer to keep their USDOT number active.

**Who Should File** Owner-operators, small carriers, and fleet operators who have ceased interstate trucking operations. Carriers who have sold their business should file for cancellation under the old entity — the new owner will obtain a new USDOT number.

**Database Removal Timeline** Removal from the FMCSA active carrier database takes up to 21 days after the filing is processed. During this period, calls, texts, and emails from third-party compliance vendors and lead generators may continue — this is normal and will stop once the database updates.

**Important:** Voluntary cancellation does not eliminate existing civil penalties or outstanding violations. Those must be addressed separately through FMCSA's administrative process.

Filing is processed through FMCSA's portal. Submitting this request authorizes the voluntary revocation of the specified USDOT number.
